So there's different facets of it, but I’ll say you never know who you– like who's like two degrees from who you need to connect to. So it may not always be a direct connection. Like for me, I was learning Spanish in the city. And the person that was teaching me Spanish knew that I was going to be transitioning out of my job, and, you know, pursuing this creative venture. And she says, “Well, what about film?” She said, “You love style. What about film?” She said, “People really, really love film, or they really, really don't like film just because of– it's a lot of waiting time, but when you see the– the project come to life, it's pretty– it's pretty fantastic.” And so I said, “Ooh, I'll give it a try.” And then I started developing a tribe there. So your tribe doesn't always have to be in one singular place. You can have tribes in different areas. So for fashion, it could be a tribe in– in film. There's a different aspect of fashion there: you know, you're bringing the character to life. That's a different– thats a different tribe. There could be a tribe in the fashion scene in, you know, in the city of San Antonio and how pe– people represent fashion and style, the trends in fashion and style. And those people are, you know– you know, the Fashion Week San Antonio is very, very popular in the city, you have the Fashion Awards that’s very, very popular in the city, and then you have people that’s doing the independent work. There's pe– there's people that are speaking and blogging about fashion all the time in the city. It's really about staying connected to those people, and part of that is using your voice. And that's the importance of voice, it's– it takes that invisible thread, it makes it visible. Because you would not have known if we wouldn’t’ve had this conversation today about who I am, you know, and– and what I represent in the city. And there comes a connection right there.\n\nTyrone Darden","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132010/file/246629#t=216.0,311.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132010/file/246629/transcript/68749/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So speaking of– of that voice and communicating with one another. And that question gives me goosebumps, and I’ll share with you why. So I went to this event one time, and this was an event really about showing appreciation for yourself and the community around you, and it happened to be in San Antonio. And so long story short, at the end of that event, everybody was assigned to write a letter to someone else in the group and to tell them how much they appreciate them, and the letter would be mailed to you anonymously. So the letter that I received was, “Every single struggle that you endure gives you strength, so that you can be a blessing for someone else.” And so for me, that struggle was using my voice. And so I always felt a sense of judgment and rejection for using my voice. And so the moment that I started using my voice and really communicating to people who I am, what I represent, and why Style Church is what it is, it immediately brought people to me, it immediately kind of made that invisible thread between me and the next person, me and the person in the audience, really, really visible. That's when people stand up and say, “I get it. Me too. So am I. Oh, yeah?” That's where the connection really, really starts, is when you use– they say, turn your mess into a message. When you turn that story of yours into a message, that's when you can really begin to connect with people and then start building your tribe from there.\n\nTyrone Darden","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132010/file/246629#t=323.0,409.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132010/file/246629/transcript/68749/annotation/17","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I think that's phenomenal. Moving, you know, moving along a little bit, Style Church. And– and so for Black people, for African Americans, one thing that most people can agree on, or at least discuss, is that systematically, our people seem to be driven towards the– the prison system–they call it the prison pipeline. And how laws are crafted to– to kind of gear us towards those things and how– you know, you have crack versus cocaine. And then, you know, cocaine is not really a Black thing, but coke– but crack is, and if you look at the sentencing guidelines, you know, we're impacted more with something that is– that costs far less. And it just– it's not the– it's the same thing in regards to substance, but it's a different thing as far as penalty. With all that being said, reentry into society after the fact is a topic in our community. And so you have a passion for style and fashion, you have a passion for veterans– being a veteran yourself–but you also have a passion for giving people, not a second chance, but an opportunity for redemption, an opportunity for leveling the playing field, and being able to support their– themselves and their family. Wow. So I think the first thing is, everybody deserves an opportunity to be who they are at their best, regardless of circumstance. And so provide them the resource is just me being the medium, like me being the mouthpiece for them to go out and really thrive after life after prison, right? And so, for me, I go into the system and I educate them on really preparing themselves to enter the workforce afterwards. And so my goal is to– is for them to transition without limitation. So for them not to feel like, you know, “I can only do this, and when I get out, I'm always gonna have this tag.” You're an individual first, and so you deserve an opportunity. And so that's where my passion lies. It's just not, you know, giving people a second and third chance, we’re saying, “You deserve whatever it is that you want to do.
