Dr. David J. Winters and granddaughter of Albert and Louise Winters. Early on, her father inculcated the family legacy in her, that music and message are entwined, and that talent is a divine honor and responsibility. She shares stories of her father’s fiddling virtuosity and how he wove it into their everyday lives. He sang with his brothers in a group called the Spiritual Five. She discusses how well the group worked together, how it demonstrated the love they had for one another as brothers, and how that love made them successful. Ms. Winters obtained Ellis Griffin’s fiddle from her father. and displays it during this interview. In addition to being a classically trained violinist in her own right, movement, or dance, is Mara’s primary gift. She believes that music is meant literally to make the audience move.
