We were all friends. And they were the three girls that backed me up on “A Million to One.” So we went into the studio, this was in ‘58, the summer of ‘58, as I remember. And the studio was a little bit bigger than this room here, no air conditioning. And this was at the time when they used actual tape. You know, they had the one inch tape, and when they spliced it, they actually had to physically splice it with a razor blade, put the two pieces together–you know, they’d have to find the spot–put the two pieces together, tape it, and keep rolling. I was born in Jersey, spent my early years there, but after the Apollo, I actually moved to California to go to school. And Phil Medley was shopping this– this record, this master around to record companies, major labels and stuff, but nobody wanted to touch it because it was a ballad. And Elvis was hot then, rock and roll was big–you know, we're talking 1958, 1959, 1960. And so I'm in California going to school, and this is a year and a half later, I get a call. I’ve gotta come back to the East Coast, the record’s broken wide open. I come back, I start touring. On tour with Brenda Lee and Fabian, Jimmy Clanton and Chubby Checker. I mean, you name it, right? And actually worked what they lovingly called the “Chitlin’ Circuit.” Okay, that was for African American entertainers. That was, like, the big time. It was the Apollo Theater in New York, the Howard Theater in Washington, D.C., the Royal Theatre in– in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Regal Theatre in Chicago. Those were the three main venues that African American artists worked, at that time, when they were, you know, popular, when they were hot. And they called that the “Chitlin’ Circuit.” But because “A Million to One” was kind of a crossover record, I got to do a lot of record hops in Pennsylvania and worked a lot of shows for the disc jockeys around the East Coast. I actually still hold the record for being on the Dick Clark show, when it was out of Philadelphia, three times in one month, when the record was– was hot, at its peak. And that was 1960. Oh, very interesting because he never got a large label, a major label to take the record. The– the label that he’d found, was willing to take it, was Promo Records. And, of course, we didn't know at the time–and I– I didn't know because I was– I was still a kid–but the reason they took the record was the same reason that the large labels didn't take the record. Because they were actually owned by the Jersey mob–can I say that? \n\nJeremy Carrizales","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131972/file/246585#t=351.0,516.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131972/file/246585/transcript/68741/annotation/27","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yeah, yeah, okay, that’s fine. \n\nJimmy Charles","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131972/file/246585#t=516.0,517.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131972/file/246585/transcript/68741/annotation/28","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Was actu– was actually owned by the Jersey mob. And they took the record, like I said, be– because they didn't think it was going to do anything. So when the record broke, I mean, they were literally pulling people off the street, asking them to get into the studio, go into the studio to record because they wanted to show loss, they didn’t want to show profit. You know, ‘cause they were laundering money through that. This is all stuff that I learned, you know, after the horse had left the barn, of course. But Phil Medley had tentatively brokered a deal for me at RCA Victor, and the gentleman that they had fronting the company, his name was John Woolley. He was an accountant by trade– and I don't know his affiliation with them, whether he owed ‘em money or whether he did work for them or what the deal was, but in any event, he was the president of the record company. And after they had driven the company into the– into the toilet, they told him he could have the company. And he came to my family and asked if we would stay with him to– until he pulled the company out, right? And he would give us a piece of the record company. Sounded good to us, but of course, it was so far gone that he was never able to pull it out. And then when Phil went back to RCA, they weren't interested anymore. It’s since moved to the West Coast. And, you know, it was– I guess it was like a free-for-all. All of the writers hung out in one spot, you know. They had a couple of office buildings where they would go and sit down and write tunes. As a matter of fact, Otis Blackwell–I don't know if you're familiar with him–he wrote a lot of stuff for Elvis Presley. And he would do demos and send it to Elvis, and Elvis would almost mimic his rendition of the tune. He– he passed quite some time ago, but he got a Grammy, posthumously. It's probably fifteen– fifteen, twenty years ago.
