We're celebrating San Antonio's Tricentennial: 300 Voices in 300 Days on TAAN TV. I have with me today Mr. Kinyo Laditon, here to share his story, his life, and the contributions that he's made to our great city. Kinyo, welcome. \r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 0:20\r\nThank you. Yeah.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:20\r\nWelcome to TAAN TV. So you go by Kinyo?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 0:24\r\nKinyo.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:24\r\nYou're rebranding. I like that.\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 0:25 \r\nYes, re- const- always, always rebranding.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:29 \r\nYes, absolutely. Now, tell me where were you born?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 0:31 \r\nI was born in- this is actually always confusing to me. I was born in- we lived in Berkeley, but I was born in Oakland, California. The hospital was in Oakland, so Northern California. \r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:42 \r\nOkay, how did you end up here in San Antonio?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 0:45 \r\nOh, man. Well, we lived there until I was like twelve, and then we went to Southern California- L.A. area. So I lived out there for a while, and then my parents came here like six years ago. And then I decided to come here and join them, and then they- then they left but I stuck around because it was cool, so–\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 1:06 \r\nCool. Cool. So do you have any other family here?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 1:09 \r\nNope. It's just me. Yeah.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 1:11 \r\nJust you? Are you loving this city?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 1:14 \r\nI do. Yeah, I really do like San Antonio. It took me a wh- well, you know, I came here to San Antonio to relax, kind of, and get away from, you know, what was going on in L.A. So at that time, it was perfect. And then since then, as I've started to do more stuff, I've realized San Antonio is a really cool city.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 1:32 \r\nIt is. It is. Well tell me what do you do here in San Antonio for a living?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 1:37 \r\nYeah, so I'm a poet, number one. So I- I write books and I publish these books. And so I- I'm actually currently doing something where I publish one book of poetry a month. And so that's been fun. I've been doing that for about six months–I'm on book number seven–so in a- in a week or so I'm gonna put out another book. And then I'm also an entrepreneur, and I do a lot of media-related stuff.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 2:00 \r\nOkay. One book a month. That's an aggressive goal. Lots of hard work, then?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 2:07 \r\nYeah, it's- I mean, yeah, it's definitely very difficult, and I'm sure I'm gonna go back and do some editing after this whole process is done, but it's been- it's been great. It's been fun. I- I write a lot, and so even going back over some of the stuff that I've written recently, I'm like, “Oh, this is really great stuff to put out now.” And I hope that people enjoy some of them. [laughs]\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 2:30 \r\nSo where can we find your books? \r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 2:32 \r\nYeah, so- all of them, if you go to kinyo.org, which is my website. Very simple, yeah–\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 2:39\r\nOkay–\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 2:40\r\n–it’s all on there.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 2:40 \r\n[To the camera] kinyo.org. [To Kinyo Laditon] We’re pu- pushing this for you. We're gonna get you some followers, more followers.\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 2:47 \r\nI th- I appreciate it. I didn’t want to do a direct plug, but you did it for me, so. \r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 2:51 \r\nYes. So tell me, are you part of, like, any organizations or boards here in the city?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 2:58 \r\nI'm gonna say, not really. There- you- one thing about San Antonio, there's a lot of really, really great organizations. And I do partner on occasion with some of them and I'm learning about some new ones. Get Texas is a really great one, and we- we might be in the- in development of doing something with them that's going to be really cool. They do a lot of video too, so that- that should be fun. Other than that, I mean, I have my own company– Project Forward –and with that we partner with even more orga- cool organizations like Black Writers of San Antonio–which I know Mr. Composition, you'll see him on here, you're talking about that–and that's with Franque Bains. And, um… there's the Blah Poetry, I guess. I love them. They started a new organization called Write Art Out, which I learned about because of another great organization called Progress Studios, which is- tha- which helps artists and- and, um… and artists and entrepreneurs. There’s so many great organizations, but there aren't- there's not a specific one I'd say that I work with, but I'm just floating the stream right now. It’s a lot of fun.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 4:04 \r\nRight. Well tell me, then, a little bit about your company. And I know you said you do the writing, but you also have the media side of the house. Tell me a little bit about that.\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 4:14 \r\nYeah, that ro- arose out of just, I think, the necessity of being an entrepreneur, and you know, the 2000s and I found- my entire life I've loved video media, and I've made some fun projects with different friends and stuff like that. And I just realized- you know, and watching other great entrepreneurs out there, I was like, “Okay, video is a really great strategy for meeting people that you're never going to meet and talking to them.” And so I started putting together a little structure and I realized, you know, at its core, it's really just the thing about communication and really getting in love with communicating your ideas to other people and helping other people do that. So it's turned into a little of a… a little- a little battleship that I'm rolling through town and we're doing different workshops and- and events and stuff like that and trying to… trying- trying to tell a story of authenticity, you know, from- from the point of view of all these great influencers in San Antonio.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 5:12 \r\nSo do you do that at one- you go through different venues to do that?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 5:16 \r\nYeah, so the event that I've been doing, we did fifty-two events in the last year, more than fifty-two events–sounds like a made-up number because that's how many weeks there are in the year, but that's- it was around that.\r\n\r\n\r\n[mutual laughter]\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 5:28\r\nOne a week. One a week. You did one a week.\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 5:30\r\nIt's been around- it’s- it's been around there or more in the last year. We did this talk show where we go to different local great San Antonio venues like Burleson- Burleson Yard, which is out there on Austin street. So many cool things coming up that's on the East Side. And then we go there, we do a talk show, we invite artists out, entrepreneurs out, different people who are- we had Steven Luckey, he ran for mayor n- we- we try to, you know, give some extra distribution to people like that. But yeah, we did that. That was a lot of fun. And now we're doing some other events. I don't want to- I don't want to go on forever on it.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 6:05 \r\nYes. That's pretty awesome, then. You are a busy man.\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 6:10 \r\nYeah, yeah. Ironically, right now, you actually caught me in a time where, towards the end of the year, I'm sort of transitioning into just sort of resting and looking at a lot of the other great stuff that everyone else is doing and thinking about how we can really do even more great stuff in 2018.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 6:26 \r\nYeah, getting your 2018 game plan ready. Yeah, that's important. That's important.\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 6:32\r\nIt’s- it’s super important. \r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 6:33\r\nSo tell me, what has been, like, your biggest contribution, you'd say, to the city of San Antonio?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 6:41 \r\nWell, my biggest contribution to the city of San Antonio? My smile, I think. No– [laughs]\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 6:46\r\nYour smile. Love it. I love it. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 6:49\r\nIt's a great city, and I think I've been doing a lot of just list- listening, you know, to a lot of the really great people who are already here, and I think that has enabled me to, you know, find different ways to provide value. So listening, connecting with the- with the city as much as I can. And there's so much more to go. It's a massive, massive city. Yeah.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 7:11 \r\nYes. And you've said it, it really is a massive city, lots of opportunity here. And so, you know, you've been here for six years. So what do you like most about the city of San Antonio?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 7:25 \r\nWhat do I like most? The culture. You know, I find that San Antonio, it's a- it's a big city and there's lots of lots of different culture groups, you know, and people are really are centered around having authentic mediums of expressions, conversations, locations, in a- in a very casual, fun way. So it's- it’s a city where you can really build and really showcase some of the cool things that people get up to.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 7:59 \r\nSure. And it sounds like you've influenced, of course, a lot of people, since you've been doing all the wonderful things that you're doing and pr- I’m sure not just here in this city, but before even coming here. But who would you say has been a major influencer in your life to get you on the path to where you are today?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 8:19 \r\nSo many people, definitely, in life. I would have to say my parents more than anything. I mean, yeah, they were just always there, so… [laughs] But I mean, they gave- they’re g–\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 8:32\r\nYes, of course. Encouraging you, I’m sure.\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 8:34\r\nYeah, they were positive stuff. And I- you know, I've- as the more I get to an age where I feel like it's important for me to, you know, really appreciate, you know, the time with my parents, I just notice so many different things about who I am and how that connects to who they are. But in San Antonio, I can say without a doubt–since I've been here and started working in the entertainment scene–there's an awesome poet, Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson, and she has been just one of the coolest, most open, um… entertainers that I've met in the city. And she's always trying to find ways to think about me and help me out, and- and send me little tips and things like that. And I- I super appreciated that.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 9:19 \r\nAnd that's awesome to have someone to help mentor you through your journey in life. And I'm sure you have other people that you have mentored on their journey through and so it's great to give back, I'd say. So why do you feel, as an African American, that it's important for you to share your own story?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 9:41 \r\nUm, it's interesting. I guess- I think it is important to increase representation of- you know, there's- there's so many- there's- right now, I think what's going on with media is we have all the really big, great studios, you know. And that's fun, and they- they showcase what going on in a majority of America, but when you have, you know, groups that are smaller–even if it's not based on skin color, if it's based on culture or anything like that, or an area- a subject of conversation–if you're not, you know, shining light on- with content that has those subjects in them, then you're just missing out on the general diversity and reality of life. So I think it's important because I know I have a lot of great ideas, and I see a lot of other people with really cool ideas. And it always inspires me to be like, “Alright, we're gonna start this new video series, and this video series, and this video series.” And I think even catching little s- snippets of what different people are doing, it really- it really enriches the conversation, the depth of thought that we're able to have on conversations–and we're having some pretty important conversations these days, some extremely heavy conversations, and we're approaching it in a really shallow way. So maybe if we thought with more, you know, diversity, we could come to some more thoughtful [pauses] conclusions.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 11:03 \r\nPerfect. Perfect. Sir, thank you. You are doing quite a bit here, and so we just appreciate everything that you're doing in this great city. [To the camera] And you can find Kinyo’s work and his books on [to Kinyo Laditon] kinyo.org?\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 11:18 \r\nYes, kinyo.org. If you- if you have trouble spelling it out, it's really on you. It's a total of about eight letters. [laughs] I’m just joking. But yeah, kinyo.org. That was just a joke.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 11:32 \r\nK-I-N-Y-O, right? \r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 11:33\r\n[laughs] K-I-N-Y-O. \r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 11:34\r\nK-I-N-Y-O. Kinyo.org. And I think we can remember that.\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 11:40 \r\nI think so. \r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 11:40 \r\nYes. Sir, thank you very much–\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 11:42\r\nThank you so much–\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 11:43\r\n–for joining us.\r\n\r\n\r\nKinyo Laditon 11:43\r\n–this was great.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 11:44\r\nYeah, so I'm signing off. Again, this is Saundra Nichols on TAAN TV. You've heard from Kinyo, his story, his life and the contributions that he's made to our great city.
