I don't think that I'm going to lose anybody when I tell them that I was raised in Wheatley Courts, on the corner of Hays [Street] and Hudson [Street], across the street from a little place called “Jolly Time,” owned by Mr. And Mrs. Lonnie Sanders. I remember the place being built with a building block, probably in 1948. I was born in San Marcos, Texas, June 21, 1936, to the parents of Willie and Augurene Barnett, in San Marcos. Moved to San Antonio with my parents, probably in 1939. Can remember vividly December 7, 1941. I was a little kid, maybe five or six, chronologically. And it's probably the strongest image in my mind, was the bombing of Pearl Harbor and remembering this particular day. And we were living in Wheatley Courts at the time. Had two brothers and a sister, who was the baby. Older brother, younger brother, younger sister. As boys, we were two years apart. My older brother was two years older, then me, then my younger brother was two years younger. My sister didn't come along until about eight years later. She was born in ‘43, I think. So the timing–and God at the timer in situations like this–that it was just so awesome in my life because my father did not go into World War II as a military man. But if you didn't go into the military, you were drafted to work at, let's just say, Kelly Field. So he worked at Kelly. My mother also was drafted, she drove a truck, those big troop-moving trucks, until the war was over. Well, most people will view war economically as a boon. And that's when I happen to notice money coming into the East Side. I attended Booker T Washington Elementary School, there on Nolan [Street], Douglass Junior High School, on Martin Luther King [Boulevard], and Phyllis Wheatley High School, class of 1954. Great, great, great class. After high school, attended St. Philip's College a couple of years. But my true love was music, and I was attracted to it at a very, very young age. I heard “Bird” and I recognized that there was something uniquely different and powerful about hearing Charlie Parker at seven, eight, nine years old. And- and being able to ask the question, “Mother, who is that?” [imitating his mother] “Shut up boy.” We- you know. He played with the Earl “Fatha” Hines Band in New York City, and they would broadcast up there, but some kind of way we could get it on this big Victrola radio. And I bugged her and bugged my mother until she said, “Now that’s a saxophone, but we can't afford anything like that,” you know. Finally, about nine years old, she says, “Well, you get a job, you can buy your own.” Wow. That's what I did. I was–\n\nChristopher Herring","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641#t=43.0,379.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641/transcript/68752/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So you bought your- you bought your first saxophone after you got your job? \n\nVernon \"Spot\" Barnett","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641#t=379.0,381.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641/transcript/68752/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yeah. I’m setting pins–the old hand setup, before they had the automatic machines–and I remember going to Sears and Roebucks. The horn was eighty-nine dollars. We paid eight dollars down and eight dollars a month. That's how I got my first personal saxophone, which was around 1949, I think. Somewhere in there. In high school, I did not even play saxophone in the marching band because the better musicians are given other horns to strengthen situations that are needed more than your likes and dislikes. So I played the baritone horn, which is like a bigger, bigger, bigger trumpet because it's a bell instrument. And I was one of the better musicians. In fact, my family was very musical on my mother's side. Her father was Horace Greeley Byars, and his brother, Avanell, they had a church band. My entire life was spent in the COGIC [Church of God in Christ] Church scene. So the music is good. My mother's brother, Douglas, was a trumpet player, one of the better trumpet players out of Eastwood [Country Club]. My mother's baby sister was a piano player, my mother played piano and banjo, and her baby brother was a tuba player. So there was music in my family all the time, you know. I just didn't know how good they were until after I went through it myself and learned, wow, I got musical genes, you know. Being fast, like I was, by the time I got to be a senior in high school, I was already married. Now I'm seventeen years old, got a family, and still not graduated out of high school. What one of the conditions on me getting married was that my wife and I go back to school, and that we did. So I had one more year. So now instead of, you know, having fun, I gotta work. At the same time, I'm practicing baritone. When I get home, now I got to spend time practicing the saxophone, which I did. Got to be pretty p-proficient. If you go over to Wheatley High S– it’s a junior school now– there's a mural on the wall, and I think it's called… something about the people on the mural. My picture is up there, along with Constable Marshall [Matthew “Nite” Marshall], who has passed on. But I think they saw something in me, even when I was a youngster, because there was, at the time, nothing that I liked better than music. And it came pretty easy to me because of how much practice I put into it. And I was kind of fortunate. God kept His hand on me because I had no idea that I would get the opportunity that I did, and being in the first band I played with out at the Ebony Club, owned by Mr. Monty J. Johnson. And we formed a band, “Big” Walter Price, Ponty “Guitar” [Gonzales], Johnny Lefferage, a few- that they’re white. And after being together a few months, we went out to TNT, which is called Tanner ‘N Texas Recording Studio, and recorded. As soon as these guys recorded, the next week, they quit, and everybody went to Houston. Left me here by myself. And I'm like, “Wow.” I'm like nineteen, I guess, so Mr. Johnson asked me, he said, “Well, can you just get a band together so we can play this weekend?” I said, “Yeah, I can try,” you know. And I did. Was fortunate enough to pick some very, very good help to get me through this baptism in fire that I'm going through. And I was fortunate enough to pick some very, very good players to get me started. I'm about nineteen, they're all in their thirties, so I couldn't do nothing but learn. The situation made it beautiful. And that was my start here, at the Ebony, and I ended up playing the Keyhole, Eastwood, the Senate, the Dream, the Hot Shot. There just– there were musical clubs everywhere. In fact, if you had anything large enough to hold ten people, they had a band.\n\nChristopher Herring","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641#t=539.0,924.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641/transcript/68752/annotation/11","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"What– who were some of the artists that used to come through San Antonio that you were able to play with?\n\nVernon \"Spot\" Barnett","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641#t=924.0,934.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641/transcript/68752/annotation/12","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"To kind of make it final, my probably best gigs were with Bobby Bland, traveling with him, Ike and Tina Turner, traveled with them, Ray Charles. The Eastwood was owned by Mr. Johnny Phillips, one of the-- one of the best club operators I've ever met in my life. \n\nChristopher Herring","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641#t=1134.0,1189.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641/transcript/68752/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"W-was he-- and– was he a musician? \n\nVernon \"Spot\" Barnett","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641#t=1189.0,1192.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641/transcript/68752/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"No, no.\n\nChristopher Herring","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641#t=1192.0,1193.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/132026/file/246641/transcript/68752/annotation/31","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He wasn't? And they were looking for meaning– the Caucasians were looking for good entertainment. Eastwood was what was happening. They were looking for good management, good situations. Everything just happened to fall in place at Eastwood. And the Keyhole was the exact same situation, but they had the segregation issue to deal with inside the city limits.
