Daniel Winters, uncle of siblings Melanie Brooks and Ed Winters, talks about his mother and father and sharecropping in Atascosa County. The group shares how land was acquired and then, as family members moved off the farms, it was sold. Sister and brother, Melanie Brooks and Ed Winters, discuss growing up in Pleasanton, Texas, with the Jackson side of their family. Daniel Winters relates how his father, Albert Winters, wrote letters to the state Board of Education to obtain lumber to build a school in Charlotte, Texas, and in regard to integrating schools in Pleasanton, Texas. The discussion moved to Ellis Griffin, a well-respected fiddle player for waltzes and square dances, who was invited to play at the Grand Ole Opry. One of Ellis Griffin’s three fiddles is still in the family. Primary values instilled by their parents were the love of God and the love of family. The group relates how integration dispersed the community, virtually disbanding cultural awareness, and how their family reunions help to counter that effect. They share their sense of powerlessness and erasure upon learning of the disinterments at the Winters Family Cemetery. The group expressed their desire for more acknowledgement and awareness of the presence, contributions, and  accomplishments of African Americans in San Antonio, including their family.
