But I have to drop back on giving– paying homage to some others who are role models, and there might be– let's say some different thoughts as I bring up this one role model. There was a gentleman that I worked with, first Black architect here in San Antonio, Norcell Haywood. And Norcell, he actually did the Second Baptist Church, several schools, Antioch Church, many churches here in the San Antonio area, as well as other major projects. But Norcell impressed upon me a– an idea, as an African American in the profession of architecture, of defying the paradigm. I mean, going out and making things happen, even to the extent of creating his own development activities. I take a lot of– give– give Norcell a lot of homage, and mainly because he also supported efforts that may not have been popular within the community. And I d– I don’t necessarily mean the African American community, but within the business community, where he challenged the powers that be. And generally for African American benefits is the reason that, kind of, motivated him to challenge the powers. I mean, even to the extent of helping to instill a scholarship program to the University of Texas [at Austin], of which he was one of the first African Americans who graduated from the University of Texas, and one of the first in the architectural program as well. But as a result, he was one that fought to deliver things to the community, and particularly to African American people.\n\nSaundra Nichols","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131986/file/246595#t=219.0,336.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131986/file/246595/transcript/68744/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Right. And then, as the– my role, providing some of the drawings and designs, he gave us that opportunity. To that extent, we were able to create the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex, which really generated a $10 million infusion of development within that section of the city. Other projects I've worked on, currently, right now, the Cameron Elementary School. My firm did the renovations of Cameron Elementary School, and it was an opportunity to bring into central city school district a newness in the character of the school environment that the students go through. We created a very vibrant and colorful atmosphere within the school, and one of the high tech, I’m gonna say, characters–in terms of the building–is the high tech glass and metal effect that we were gonna put on the building.
