Mt. Zion was founded in 1871 by five slaves and a white minister–five ex-slaves, if you will, and a white minister. So– because, you know, it was after the Emancipation Proclamation. And from that it grew. It was [pauses] on the other side of town– of [U.S. Highway] 281, on Santos Street, and in 1925, they marched from Santos Street– and I think we have only one person left, who actually made that march, still alive. She was a baby then. She didn't make the march, but she was carried–sister [Juanita] Guilmenot–marched to the current location, which it has been there since 1925. When the church was built at that location, they only built the bottom level ‘cause they couldn't afford to put the top on, but they knew they were going to do that. So in 1928, the top was added. And then we had outstanding ministers like F. G. Curry and leading on up to Reverend Black, who just did fantastic jobs of growing the congregation and growing its influence in the community. Reverend Black started the first bank that we had– a credit union that we had, a credit union, which is no longer in existence, but it ran for about forty years. We also have housing units for senior citizens, we had daycare, adult daycare, and also, Reverend Black started the first– I think it’s Meals on Wheels that was in the city, not just for– on the Black side, but in the city. We've been together forty-two years, and we have three children– three adult children. She has a degree in music from the Petrie [phonetically] School of Music, and she's a opera singer, but she can do some Aretha Franklin and some Beyonce and stuff like that as well. So that's my immediate family. My extended family, very much involved in the military. Of the four surviving brothers, all of us are career military. I have a brother that did thirty-seven years as Chief Warrant Officer, he's now retired. Another brother, who is also a deacon at our church, he's a retired colonel from the [United States] Air Force. I'm a retired colonel from the [United States] Army. And I have a brother– baby brother, who is in the Army now as a major with, I think, nineteen years in the service. So, that's our family history. But, I had a mother who passed away four years ago, a grandmother, who really instilled the faith in me, and all of us, that we serve the community, but we serve God first. And we try to treat everybody the way we want to be treated. So that's kind of my background. My wife was a special ed teacher, she just retired, and so she works diligently at the church. And so, that's what we do now. We– I– When I got out of the military, I retired. So you know, that's- that's good. I wanted to be in a place where I could make a difference, where I can serve the community, and Mt. Zion is absolutely great for that. The people are wonderful. They have a heart.
