And I was blessed to have been a participant in the Upward Bound program when I was in high school. We also have a former student who became the highest-ranked Hispanic in US Secret Service. And we have former students that are professors, teachers, doctors, attorneys, entrepreneurs. So that's another reason that it would take a lot more resources, considering the amount of services that we provide. We bring them to the university and they're taught by university professors while they're in high school. So they're having an opportunity to become integrated into a co- a university environment, and be able to begin developing relationships whereby these professors will help to expand their minds beyond what most high school students would be exposed to. For instance, in our biology courses, the professors expose the students to using equipment that most high school students would never have the opportunity to come near because some of it may cost, maybe a half-million dollars–but they're very careful with it. And then they also have access to strong letters of recommendation for colleges and universities. So, many of our students have degrees now from places like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, UT Austin, Texas A\u0026M College Station, of course St. Mary's, and just universities all over.\n\nSaundra Nichols","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131965/file/246575#t=339.0,450.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131965/file/246575/transcript/68740/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Wow. And the summer immediately following high school graduation, we consider that summer to be their bridge summer, where they're actually bridging the gap between high school and college. So we enroll them in a three semester art course at St. Mary's, so that if there are any concerns about their readiness or preparation for higher education after going through the college preparatory process while in high school, we're there to be able to address any concerns that may come up before they go to the college of their choice in the fall. This was a national award that was presented by the Obama administration, and Upward Bound was one of the three programs that was featured, for which that award was given. And so I felt wonderful about that. I also was selected as a National TRIO Achiever, and this is someone who's been through a TRIO program, and Upward Bound is one of the TRIO programs. And it was for my contributions in the field of education on a nationwide basis. And I also received the same award from our state professional association, for which I also am a former president, the Texas Association of Student Special Services Programs. But all of these awards were because of the contributions to the youth in San Antonio. It's- the weather is beautiful, it's a wonderful place to live, we have wonderful resources. I just- I really like everything about San Antonio. My mother because she was a woman ahead of her time. And when she raised me, she let me know that she wanted me to achieve whatever was my highest and my best potential. And so she encouraged me to participate in extracurricular activities. She did not raise me with a concept that I would be limited by my race or gender. And so I basically didn't see either factor as being a hindrance to my achievement. And so when I was in high school, she would even wash and iron my clothes on the weekend because she knew that I was in marching band, and I was involved in clubs and organizations–I was the vice president of my senior class–and she wanted me to go out and do those things. And so I look back now and I achieved a lot of things without knowing that they were unusual for women [laughs] to do. And certainly for an African American woman. The interesting thing about becoming a parent is looking into the eyes of a child, and what you're getting back is innocence. And you have to give your best because that child is watching you, and you are a role model. And I remember that he came home during his undergraduate years–he was a student at Texas A\u0026M University and College Station, and I was working on my PhD from Texas A\u0026M in College Station–and he said to me, “Mom, if I'm getting in the way of you finishing your doctorate–,” and all I needed to do was just to finish my dissertation, he said that he would spend the Christmas holidays with his friends to give me the time to work on my dissertation. And I was taken by surprise because he had nothing to do with the fact that I was not working on my dissertation. And when I realized that it mattered to him and he was watching me, how could I ever tell him that he should achieve his dreams, If I'm his role model, and I'm letting a number of other things get in the way? So I said, “No, I want you to stay home over the holidays, I don't want you to spend it with your friends.” I actually finished my dissertation proposal and sent it off to my committee chair, and by August, I was graduating with my PhD. And he was doing a summer program at Harvard. That summer, he was working as an intern at Harvard's Brigham Young- I'm sorry, Brigham Women's Hospital. And he only had a week left to finish that program when I graduated, but he flew home for my graduation, and then flew back to Harvard to finish that last week. And so he's just been such an inspiration, and he's achieved so much as well. So we have a very close relationship, where we talk to each other very often.
