So I went to St. Mary's University for one year, and then because of the expenses, my scholarship didn't go as far as I anticipated. So I graduated from UTSA [University of Texas at San Antonio] with a bachelor's degree in sociology. When I graduated from UTSA with my bachelor's degree in sociology, I was-- my plan was to use it as a tool to get a decent-paying job. So I went to work at First Federal Savings and Loan, located in Alamo Heights, and we were robbed. I was training to be a savings counselor, so I was working the drive thru, and a young man came in on foot and robbed the bank. So I immediately decided this is not the career path that I want to choose. So I then went to work at– for the city of San Antonio as a library assistant at the downtown public library. And at the library, I was a library assistant–you had to have a bachelor's degree–but I wanted to be a librarian, because for me, education is the key. And in order to be a librarian, I needed a master's in library science. So I went to work at Our Lady of the Lake University, where they were offering a master's degree in library science. But when I got there in the mid-’80s, they had sunsetted the program. So I became a missions counselor recruiter for Our Lady of the Lake University, which is where I fell in love with higher ed. And so after working in higher ed, I decided I needed a master's degree, because what I've learned is that in order to advance in your career, you need to all– have all of the necessary tools in order to advance. It's all about positioning and being ready for that next career opportunity. So I got a master's degree, and then went to work at St. Philip’s College. And this is where I am today. Beginning at home, I had great parents that instilled in us the value of education. My dad– he emphasized the social skills, and my mom promoted the education. And so from there, growing up in a Black Baptist Church, that's where, in our community, the teachers, the doctors, the lawyers. So all of those people were individuals that we were able to look up to and aspire, to have high aspirations based on their successes. And most importantly, my pastor at the time, Reverend John Joseph Rector, Sr., he taught us the importance of having a center. So when you recognize there's a hi-- higher calling on your life, and when trials and tribulations come, you don't just fall apart. So it was just understood she was going to school, as well. I– I think over the course of my life, I put a lot of my career aspirations on hold because I believe that our children are on loan to us. So I instilled a lot of-- a lot of time in trying to promote and develop Monique's life. And in fact, when I interviewed for the job at St. Philip's College, the president at the time, Charles Taylor, said, “Oh, it's obvious you have a wonderful daughter. Now I need for you to tell me a little bit about yourself.” So sometimes you tend to lose who you are when you're raising children. I'm a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, it’s an international sorority. And the primary focus for that is to give back to the community. And in doing so, I always tell-- this is what I tell my president, “I believe in partying with a purpose.” So whenever we have an event, the underlying motive is to find ways to provide opportunities for our students. So we engage the community. People give-- one, people don't give if you don't ask, and people give to areas that they're passionate about. And so at St. Philip's College, we have so many various avenues for people to give. We have culinary, we have automotive, we have aircraft mechanics, and there are so many different-- early childhood, the early childhood programs. So there's so many different areas for which people can give to support scholarship opportunities for our students. So we like to get them on the campus, give them tours, we have a mini-hospital for our nursing students. And it just– it’s-- I get excited when I even think about the scholarship opportunities because students, they need help. And the one thing you don't want to do is graduate with a loan debt behind you.
