I grew up inner city Atlanta in what we call “the projects,” in Carver Homes, but a very– a very knitted community. And so while we were not financially very rich, we were strong in community. I grew up in a time that was really exciting. I was 12 when Dr. King was assassinated, so living in Atlanta afforded me a lot of opportunities that other communities maybe didn't have. I had a rich history– a rich cultural history, had great teachers in elementary and high school, and so we were right at the cutting edge of– of things that were changing and evolving for African Americans and for people in our community. Later, Andrew Young, who, of course, was with Dr. King and later became mayor of the city and, of course, Ambassador Young, was a representative in the community. I couldn't vote for him, but remember his early campaigns. Julian Bond was someone we knew well in Atlanta, and so was there when we had our first African American mayor. So really, along with that, that we didn't think much about at the time, looking back on it was a rich history, but it was– it was a lot of fun. There were a lot of opportunities, and– and so we not only had cultural opportunities, they're big on the arts, and just living in a big city had a lot of advantages for me. \n\nJeremy Carrizales","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565#t=44.0,134.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565/transcript/68735/annotation/11","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yeah. And after San Antonio, finished his career overseas in the European Basketball League, but spent, really, seven and a half foundational years in San Antonio. They were not quite winning championships just yet, but they were division champs a few times, and so it was a pretty exciting time. Church was very important to– to me. Our faith is very important to me, and so we found community churches. I’ve only belonged to two since I've been in San Antonio, The “Exciting” West End Baptist Church, and then now Antioch Baptist Church. So, all those elements were really important, and then the–the cultural diversity. I grew up in Atlanta and I'm in a city where I've learned so much about the Hispanic culture, and other cultures, and so it's pretty– pretty exciting. Of course, a lot of my time was focused on home and on our children, and like I say, on our faith community. I've watched that over the years and– and it just fascinates me how that happens, and, of course, like other cities, as we grow, we have to contend with traffic and moving about. He– Michael and I– he did a non-profit out there where he was helping children in the community, children in Inner City, much like him. Michael also had a period where he very publicly acknowledged that he got into drugs and addiction, recovered, and wanted to offer some of that back. And so for years, even while he was going back and forth to Europe, he worked on the eastside of San Antonio in some of the schools there doing after school programs and teaching kids, bringing not only athletes but other business managers program and teaching kids, “Hey, you know, you can stumble, you can make mistakes, but the most important things are to recover, to focus on education. You can be cool, you can be way cool and still be brilliant and do other things,” and so that was one link. Also, we raised our children here, so this is home to them. This is where they where they grew up, and so we had already settled in, and was going pretty much between San Antonio and Atlanta, and then Michael was diagnosed with cancer. And so during that period, the community here really rallied around him, myself, and our children, and so it was home by the end. So, doing some things that really keeps you growing in the San Antonio community. \n\nJeremy Carrizales","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565#t=585.0,637.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565/transcript/68735/annotation/31","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"What–\n\nDiana Mitchell","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565#t=637.0,637.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565/transcript/68735/annotation/32","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It’s not easy to get rid of San Antonio. \n\nJeremy Carrizales","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565#t=637.0,639.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565/transcript/68735/annotation/33","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yeah, definitely. I grew up, again, in just– inner city, and so I think that lifelong, you never forget that. Those roots are deep. Also, I have this thing where it's like, “Take a look at people for who they are, not their finances, not where they live, not what they're doing, but–but who they are. Take a little time to get to know who they are.” And I just happen to be one of those people who think that with a– with a little help, not necessarily a helping hand, but, you know, to reach back and help somebody up, or to be– to help somebody navigate systems. We have a lot of systems in this city. We have a lot of systems that are built to help people but they don't know how to reach out to them. I know San Antonio pretty well, but when Michael was diagnosed with cancer, dealing with the hospital system was scary, and I had wonderful support. Can you imagine dealing with systems and you have no support? So, that's one of the reasons. As my kids were getting older, and, of course, you know about the great things that George Gervin has done in the city, and so it was pretty– a pretty easy fit. As I began to do things with Michael, I began to say, “Oh, you know, I really enjoy building programs and working with families,” and so spent a little time working at San Antonio Fighting Back and working in the middle schools, but always with– with families and moms. And then traveling in Italy, one of the first things that I–I found out that connected women were being moms. You don't have to understand the language, you don't even have to know the culture, but moms are just moms. And so when I got back to San Antonio, looking for things to do, that was a good fit for me.\n\nJeremy Carrizales","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565#t=648.0,760.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565/transcript/68735/annotation/37","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Hearing different stories from like people, you know, in Italy, being a mother, that kind of stuff. I love to hear stories of people, their histories, what– what brought them to where they are. And then also hearing 300 voices, you hear 300 opinions. I– I don't–I don’t shy from having a opinion or meeting people who have different opinions than mine. I think that this is a positive way to share that. San Antonio is a community that have, you know, people who are diverse, who have diverse cultures and histories, and even within the same culture have diverse backgrounds. And so I think it's important to share our stories in a setting where we can, you know, where we're not defensive, but where we can actually hear the other person's voice. That's one of the things we do within the work I do. It's not about telling people what to do. It's about hearing what it is they want to achieve and helping them find their voice. I think one of the things I kinda alluded to– first of all, it was just– it was just nice to be a part of a community. The Spurs were, even when Michael started to play, they were well thought of, but you could be part of this popular thing, but the people in the community afforded you some privacy to have some time with your family and to do other things. But also when things were difficult, you know, the Spurs community bi– rallied around Michael and just his history of being here, and people said, “We really appreciate, you know, what Michael did for the city,” and that was gratifying. When he was ill and not able to get out as much, he heard those things and they were comforting to him and so, of course, they were comfo–comforting to our family. Even now, there–there are fans who can quote his stats. And while we're on camera, I'll just say, “I can,” whether I can or not, [laughter] but it's– it's really that kind of feel that's important. And when we were dealing with his illness, and then subsequently his death, it was a comfort to know that there were people who care, who took the time to send cards or to send messages. But also, to just pause a minute and say, you know, “We really do appreciate what Michael did for the city. We really thought of, you know, enjoyed watching him play.” And then even for young people to come up and say, you know, “Coach was– was at my school,” which is what they called Michael, and so being a part of that is gratifying. Don't take it for granted. It was a privilege to be a part of the Spurs family and to play in this city, and then it was a– it was just so heartwarming that people took time while he was ill to let him know that they were there and support in all– all kinds of ways to make sure that he was well cared for. And to just, you know, to let the family know, you're not, you know, walking through this alone. And that really was wonderful for us. It was a difficult time, but because we were connected to family and community, it was a time that we were not alone.\n\nJeremy Carrizales","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565#t=873.0,1014.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565/transcript/68735/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Do you have maybe, in–in closing, do you have maybe a fond memory of– of Michael growing up from maybe when you guys first met or in his time in the league, or any kind of thing you could share with us? \n\nDiana Mitchell","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565#t=1014.0,1026.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131953/file/246565/transcript/68735/annotation/44","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"[inaudible], I probably have several, but I think the thing that I'm most– that– that I can think about Michael is probably, I never quite understood how anybody could put on those short shorts and play in front of that many people and not be nervous.
