When I went to medical school, funds were very scarce. And I had an opportunity to join the military and be an officer in the military while I was in medical school. And in my junior year, I became a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force, attending my junior and senior year in medical school. And at that time, I became a first lieutenant. And– and by the time I finished my internship right here in El Paso, Texas, I became a captain. And from there I went to overseas, to England, for four years. And then back to my residency training in– at Ann Arbor Michigan for three years to Andrews Air Force Base for four years, and then to Germany for four years, 1970-74, then back here at Lackland 1974 to 1976. So I retired here in 1976 and went into private practice. And what do you most love about this city? You've traveled all over the world. And so I know San Antonio is your home and it's very near and dear to your heart. I lived– I worked mainly at downtown San Antonio. And the population– my patient population was mostly Mexican Americans. And I just enjoyed the Mexican American people, I really did. I just love the way they hug me, and I can hug them. We love each other. I had a tremendous relationship with my patients because every person was special. It was not a specialty type dermatology, I did all kinds of derma– general dermatology without doing very much specialty dermatology like cosmetic or surgical dermatology. But people who had rashes, people who just had an itch, whatever they had, that I took an interest. I also treated skin cancer. I did some cosmetic work but that wasn't the main thing I loved. I loved doing like private practice dermatology, and relax. You know, the opposite would be, you know, having a treadmill of patients coming in all day long. But I made a point of sitting down with each patient, having a story to tell, having an opportunity to touch and back. You know, I touch them, they touch me back. And then having a conversation other than their skin problem.
