We're celebrating San Antonio's Tricentennial: 300 Voices in 300 Days. We have with us Miss Kim Anderson to share her story, her life, and the contributions that she's made to the city of San Antonio. Thank you, first of all, Miss Anderson for joining us today. \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 0:20\r\nYou’re welcome.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:21\r\nThank you for coming out to TAAN TV.\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 0:23 \r\nThank you. My pleasure. Thanks for having me.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:25 \r\nYes. Why don’t we just jump in and just ask you a few things about yourself? Tell me, where were you born?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 0:31 \r\nI am a native Texan. I'm from East Texas, a small town called Kountze, Texas.– \r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:37 \r\nOh my gosh–\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 0:38\r\n–Popula–\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:38\r\nI know exactly where that is! \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 0:39\r\nYou do not.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:41\r\nI'm from Jasper.\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 0:42 \r\nOh my god! I have family in Jasper. [laughs]\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:44 \r\nReally? We're gonna talk after this interview. [laughs]\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 0:46\r\nThat’s too funny. Small world–\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:47\r\nYes, Kountze–\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 0:48\r\n–oh my goodness.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 0:49 \r\n–I know where Kountze is. Been through there many, many times, all my life. And so when you grew up there, did you have siblings growing up?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 0:57 \r\nOh, yes. The population is my family, just about. It's a small, little town. Everybody knows each other. So yeah, I have al- I'm from a family of seven, so. \r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 1:07\r\nOkay, well, how did you end up here in San Antonio? \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 1:09\r\nMilitary brat. My dad retired Army in 1985.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 1:14 \r\nOkay. And do you have your family all here now? Children–?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 1:19 \r\nI am a mother of two and a grandmother of three. And my oldest sister lives in Washington State. And then I have a brother that lives in League City, right outside of Houston. But the rest of us are here.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 1:32 \r\nOkay. Okay. Grandmother. I'm a grandmother. [points to self] “Nani”. And so congratulations– \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 1:38 \r\nThank you so much.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 1:39\r\n–to you. Now tell me, you were a military brat, so you went to school all over? Is that right?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 1:44 \r\nYeah. My dad had a couple of tours overseas. And so before we came to San Antonio, we were actually in Frankfurt, Germany. So I graduated on Fort Sam, Cole High School. But basically those couple of tours in Germany, we never really toured a lot in the- in the United States with his military career.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 2:05 \r\nOkay. Well, that's very common in the military, especially in the Army, our Army families travel, more so than our Air Force families, for sure. \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 2:15\r\nThat's right. \r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 2:16\r\nSo tell me, what is it that you do now?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 2:19 \r\nWell, as I stated earlier, family of seven; but sadly, I lost my baby brother, the baby of seven. He was shot and killed here in San Antonio, right off of Austin Highway. And so one thing that we did to kind of turn that pain of losing him into a purpose for helping others, we started an organization called Gifts of Love from Above. And our focus is– because he was a father, he left behind three children. And so our focus is on the mission of the children and the grief that they are left behind to cope with. So that's one of the things that, you know, I'm doing here in the community of San Antonio.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 3:02 \r\nAnd how long ago was that? You said [unintelligible]– \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 3:05 \r\nOctober 3rd was six years.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 3:07\r\nSix years? \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 3:08\r\nSeems like yesterday. It really does. It's–\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 3:12 \r\nBut that's awesome that you were able to start that organization up. I'm sure that helps, of course, with your healing–\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 3:18\r\nIt does.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 3:19 \r\nEspecially for his children. And what do you do in the organization? Are you going out working with families that have gone through the same–? \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 3:27 \r\nYes. Yeah, so as the director of the organization, I do meet families, reach out to families, and some families are referred to me whenever there's gun violence involved that caused the death of a parent or guardian. And so I'm reaching out to those family members, those children, with counseling, you know, support and- also funeral grants is another one of the services that we offer with the organization, if they do need help with some of the, you know, funding for the funeral cost.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 3:56 \r\nThat's an awesome initiative and is very much needed. And so– \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 4:00\r\nSadly. \r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 4:01\r\nYes. Sadly. Sadly. What are some other organizations that you're a part of in the city?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 4:08 \r\nAlright. So, San Antonio Violence Elimination, I sit on the advisory board for that. And basically, that's an organization that started with the city of San Antonio and fighting back; they're trying to reach those individuals who are in that at-risk lifestyle, trying to give them an avenue for which they can deter from that, you know, be it education, job training, just trying to give them other avenues to which they can get off the track of criminal activity. And then also, I work with the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. That's a grassroots organization, over 4 million followers, and I'm the faith outreach lead here in San Antonio. So basically trying to have that conversation with our faith leaders in how to have that conversation about gun violence and just, you know, stopping this senseless gun violence that's in our communities.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 4:58 \r\nYes. And so you're connecting with other organizations, even outside of San Antonio, like some of the national organizations, or–? What are some of those organizations that you're connecting with?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 5:11 \r\nRight. So the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is one of the major national organizations that I'm a part of right now, and that I go and travel and be a part of, what we call, “gun sense university.” And basically, we look at different aspects of where we are in the- you know, as far as laws and regulations and things with guns in our country, and just how to talk to legislators when we go to, you know, the state capitol and go into these offices with our senators and things like that, and just talk to them about how we can stop the just guns everywhere, and being able to, you know, have guns and- you know, in the hands of people that really should not have them, like domestic violators and criminals and things like that. I mean, we're not against the Second Amendment rights, you know, it's okay to own a gun, but just be a sensible gu- gun owner. That's basically what we, you know, really forge our, you know, foot for.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 6:11 \r\nWell, do you have, then, like a cadre of volunteers working with you?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 6:16 \r\nOh, yes. For g- for Gifts of Love from Above? Oh, yeah, of course. I mean, I have family and friends that, you know, if I need them, I'm calling upon them, and they are there, you know? So, there has been a really great reception of the organization since we've started it because so many lives have been touched by gun violence. You know, it's every day you're gonna meet someone: 93 families a day are impacted by gun violence in this country. And so, definitely having people come onboard to help, you know, with this cause and this outreach, they're willing and- yeah, so it’s definitely- but we can always use volunteers. And I am a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. And so even with some of the students, they can earn those hours for, you know, giving back and volunteering.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 7:06 \r\nWell, we will have to get your information out there because that's much needed. You know, 93 a day in the U.S. We got to work to bring that number down.\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 7:16\r\nThat’s- yes. \r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 7:17\r\nYes. So, tell me, what other contributions have you made to the city of San Antonio? I mean, I know you're working- you're very busy, by the way. It sounds like you keep a very busy life. But what other contributions have you– \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 7:31\r\nWell, you know, my focus–\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 7:32\r\n–made to the city? Well,\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 7:33 \r\n–Yeah, my focus has really been this gun violence because it's so much of a health crisis. I mean, it's definitely is a health crisis in our- in our country. And so that's where I really forged my focus on. You know, I have done some event planning and, you know, hosted comedy shows here and things like that under another event planning, little business I have, but my focus was so much on the gun violence and the importance of just helping other families that have been impacted from it, that that's what I mostly do. I also volunteer my time with the Children's Bereavement Center of South Texas. And that is a center here, located in San Antonio, and I volunteer [transition] on Wednesdays–every other Wednesdays. Children that have been infected- affected by homicides. So if they lost a family member to homicide. That night, they focus on that part of it. So it's not just losing someone to a sickness or something like that. It's- they focus in on that- that violent, criminal, you know- yeah, that cost of life.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 8:40 \r\nWow. And so when people hear your name, what are you most known for in this city? You've been in San Antonio for a while?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 8:49\r\nYeah I have.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 8:50\r\nWhat would you say you're most known for?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 8:52 \r\nWow. That's a good question. And I would say over these past three years in getting my face out there, my image, my brand, it would be me fighting for the gun violence prevention and just education and outreach for that.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 9:08 \r\nAnd would you say that you're making great strides in that area? Or do you feel like you still have a ways to go? How- how do you feel you’re doing there?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 9:17 \r\nYou know what, it- it definitely is a ways to go and that is that- like I said earlier, I mean, families, 93 a day, impacted in this country. So it definitely is a ways to go, but I think that every time that I have just one ear or two ears is- and the word spreads, I think is going to be you know, a stamp in the right direction for us trying to end the senseless gun violence in our community that's just taken- shortening the lives of some- some of our hope and promises, you know, the young lives that are being lost to just senseless gun violence. And I think that's very important, to really just stay on that- trailblaze that path to just bring an end to it. And so, you know, I'm reaching out to other organizations–I met a really wonderful lady out in California, she started this organization called Stop to end senseless gun violence. So those type of connections are important. So I think it’s gonna always be me just, you know, reaching out to other organizations and partnering with people that we can get the, you know, information out there and be just a- a voice for the voiceless.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 10:26 \r\nYes. And we're so glad to have you in this city making such a tremendous impact in San Antonio in that arena. What are some of the things that you like about San Antonio? This is such a great city, and we have a lot of tourists who come here. And I've heard- just talked to a lot of people and heard them talking about all of the wonderful things going on. What do you most like about San Antonio?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 10:52 \r\nI think I love the diversity in the- the cultural aspect of our city. You know, we really come together as a melting pot. And it's so important that we just show our culture in the ways that we, you know, can express ourselves. And I think that's very important. I'm really looking forward to San Antonio's Tricentennial, you know, celebration next year. And my organization, Gifts of Love from Above is a community partner for SA 300. So, looking forward to that. But I just love this city, and I see the promise that we have and growing and everything like that, so it's important just to be a part of that. Trailblaze.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 11:31 \r\nYeah, it's exciting. Well, lastly, as an African American, why do you think it's important for you to tell your own story?\r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 11:40 \r\nI think it's important for me to tell my own story, because I know I'm not alone. And I know that I can help somebody by letting them know that they have that support and that person that can be there with them and stand with them. You know, I go to some of the trials with some of the mothers who've lost a, you know, a son, and they- they need that support. And I think just being that listening ear and that person to just be a moment of comfort, and to be able to understand what they're going through and relate to it, I think that's something that's really important.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 12:17 \r\nThank you. I just want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come over here and share your story with us. \r\n\r\n\r\nKim Anderson 12:25\r\nThank you so much.\r\n\r\n\r\nSaundra Nichols 12:26\r\nAnd so you have heard it right here. This is Saundra Nichols on TAAN TV, 300 Voices in 300 Days. You've heard from Miss Kim Anderson, her story, her life and the contributions that she's made to our great city.
