So they saw the need of an education, so my mother’s oldest brother -- they took him under their wing and sent him away to college. And he went to Meharry Medical School, and he graduated a medical doctor. So that was my mother’s oldest brother. My mom went to an all-girls school -- my father said to her -- that mother died. My son, oldest son, was 19 -- he had finished high school -- they both went to Phillis Wheatley -- graduated from Phillis Wheatley here. And he left and went to Los Angeles because my sister had a little daughter, and she did over and above her teaching career -- she did sales. She sold products. So she needed somebody to take care of her child while she would drive from Los Angeles to other cities to give demonstrations. So she needed -- she saw how well my son could, she said, clean up her kitchen. “He was so smart, and he could clean up -- I need him to help me out with Joanie,” her daughter. So when she left -- it was after my oldest daughter got married -- when she left, she took my son with her. (laughter). And he stayed with her until he was married and had a family and had a divorce and a remarriage and all that sort of thing. So he’s back here -- even they moved back here, the two of them. And if you find yourself leading the other way, there’s something within you that’s going to make you come to your senses and turn around because what you’re going to have to do is keep your hands in God’s hands and continue, regardless of how bad sometimes things go, continue on your walk. Don’t deviate from it. You might get balled up sometimes and do things, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get forgiveness. Get on those knees and ask God to forgive you and to lead you in the right path. Because you want to spend eternity with him. We -- my dad was -- and my mom -- had been there all of their lives and they had friends. So regardless of race or creed, the people were -- we were not enemies at all. We were not buddy buddies up close, naturally, but whenever you came in contact -- business contact or whatever -- they treated us with respect -- my father, my mom -- they treated them with respect. I shall never forget, we had a Caucasian family that the mother stayed in Brenham -- we lived in a rural area -- but she stayed, this white woman, she stayed in the Brenham area because that’s where her husband left her because she sent her children to school in Brenham. I’ll never forget -- she came out to Washington County to visit her husband for the summer and my dad -- my mother was -- had -- she was not well. She had nervous indigestion, and, for about I don’t know how many years, but most of our growing up, she was sick. She could not digest food and some of the time she couldn’t sleep. She’d have to sit up and sleep in the bed. She couldn’t lie down. And despite of the fact that this is my uncle, after he started practicing medicine, found out what was wrong with her. She had a lack of sugar in her blood. And so, consequently, it interfered with her being able to take -- to just be up and about. She was just -- she was anemic. So, anyway, she had fabric at the house to make our school dresses, and this white woman who lived in Brenham was out there visiting with her husband during the summer and she came to our house for something. I don’t know what it was, but my mom was telling her she had these dresses she had to make for her little girls. She says, “Mary, send the material over and the pattern, and I’ll make the dresses.” She made our little dresses for us. She sure did. Very good.
