That's about 40 miles from Memphis, Tennessee. And my mom told this guy, “If you just leave Arkansas, I’ll marry you.” So he moved across the river to Memphis, Tennessee. So four years later, I got drafted. And I went through basic infantry airborne training and straight to Vietnam. And I went to Vietnam in July, and the night before Halloween I was– I got shot in my left arm, and I was paralyzed for a year in my left arm. And they sent me back to the States, here to San Antonio, and I stayed here for a year and didn’t buy a coat. And I was a little country boy, never been over a hundred miles away from home. And I thought it– I thought you get cold all over the world, you know. And I said, “If anywhere you can stay for a year and don't buy a coat, that’s where you ought to live at. San Antonio.” And I met my wife. She was going to school to be a nurse in the same hospital– well she wasn’t my nurse. And one day she slipped up and said she could cook. And I said, “Now you know, if I had a good nurse and a good cook, I can deal with that meanness.” So last Saturday, we've been married 45 years. I've been eating them biscuits for 45 years. \n\nJeremy Carrizales","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131985/file/246593#t=21.0,93.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131985/file/246593/transcript/68753/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Congratulations!\n\nOscar Vicks","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131985/file/246593#t=93.0,94.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131985/file/246593/transcript/68753/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"An achievement to keep ‘em. So they was trying to figure out what was going to happen. What they gonna do with all these free people? So in 1848 gold was discovered in California. So everybody said, “Let's go west.” Well you know, everybody went west, the prostitutes, the gangsters, everybody went west. But what happened, going west, they were saying, “This some nice land here. I don’t want to go west, I’ll just stay here.” But guess what? It was the Indian land. You know, and everybody called the Indian savages, but what would you do if I came to you and said, “Hey, you don’t live here no more. I live here.” You know? You’d be a savage or something, you know what I mean? So anyway, they– well, the Black soldiers are used to the fields and, you know, the heat and everything. And they said, “Well, what are they saying?” And they said “They calling y’all Buffalo Soldiers.” But when they saw that they dressed with the buffalo skin, their houses made out of Buffalo, they wore the horn, they considered that an honor.
