We’d lift up the garage, you know, back there on Brownleaf [Street] and just, you know, play. Guy from across the street had a guitar, [guy] around the corner had a guitar, we had a drum set in there. And I didn't play bass, actually, until I started– ‘til junior high school. [Inaudible] I was basically a trumpet player up until that point. Eighth grade, I think it was, I decided I wanted to play bass after visiting my grandfather in New Mexico–who was actually a mailman. But we went to his houses– to his house for the summer. Most every summer it’d either be New Mexico or it’d be Oklahoma where my dad's family was. And he had this guitar underneath the bed. And I know I wasn't supposed to look at it, but I'd go in there and I'd pull it out. And it was just like “wow.” And I’d sit there and I’d play it, and it was like it just– it talked to me. So that Christmas, I asked my dad for a guitar. And I actually got a guitar, not a bass, but I got a guitar, and I was playing bass on the guitar. You know, if you were in a band that was– that was, who you were with: you played wherever they played, blah, blah, blah. Nowadays, it's like, people are interchanging. You know, you got some guy missing, you get a call, you know those songs already, you go play somewhere. But, you know, that's what I really miss as far as the integrity of being a band, you know, you see the same people every time you go. And I think that's what helped make– made La Franz the name that it is, you know. When we actually started the band, you know, one of the vocalists in the band, she didn't like it. We had a lot of good experiences, a lot of bad. You know, it was growing pains, we were– you know, we were in our 20s. You know, we had no clue what we were doing, other than making good music on stage. We were great musically speaking, business-wise is where we, as a band, lacked. We needed some guidance and leadership. We didn't get that until later on in our careers, down the line. And that was, in itself, was even a learning lesson for us. You know, it's something that I'll always take with me as far as the industry itself. There's nothing wrong with striving to play music and be good at it. When you want to take it to that next level, you've got to have your P's and Q's and your ducks in a row ‘cause it is one of the– one of the most greediest businesses in existence, period. Because you have people with your hands out– with their hands out wanting your product, have nothing to do with your product or you, but they get a percentage of what you make. You know, you're the chef, you make this big pie, and by the time you pay everybody that needs to be paid, you have a little sliver. It doesn't make any sense to me. But that's the music industry. Some people sell their souls to be famous, some people strive and never make it. You know, there's a lot of talented people that have never seen that other side. You know, that's the– that's the downside of it. But you know what, after a while, you just have to be content and say, “Look, you want to play music just to play music.” You know, just to be– it's, I call it a giving of yourself, basically. You're allowing people– people are allowing you to share your soul, because that's what it is to be a musician, you're– you're giving of yourself. When you play, you're playing what you're feeling like at that moment. And if people can get that and feel that– I always tell people, it's like– it's like a teacher, if that one person in the class gets– gets your lesson, your day is done. You know, if the teacher says, “You know what, you get it, I'm proud of you, blah, blah, blah.” Same thing with the music. If that person comes up after the show, and says, “Man, I loved what you guys did, I loved how you sounded. Man, you play that bass, I never seen a six string blah, blah, blah.” You know, you get all these accolades and things from people, and it's nice; you can't take it too seriously. You know, that's one thing that you definitely have to learn, you can't fill your head full of that– that nonsense because, you know, you know where you are; you have to keep yourself grounded in this business. You have to keep yourself grounded ‘cause it will be easy to get lost in the shuffle.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131919/file/246537#t=376.0,516.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131919/file/246537/transcript/68763/annotation/35","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Vance Bradford: I imagine.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131919/file/246537#t=516.0,517.0"},{"id":"https://saaacam.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2808/collection_resources/131919/file/246537/transcript/68763/annotation/36","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Andy Walker: I’m– I’m telling you firsthand. You know, we didn't have the knowledge, we had trust in other people to take care of our business, and we ended up getting taken to the bank and they basically held our contract hostage. You know, and like I said, it's a learning experience. That's– that's the industry. You know, at the time, late– you know, late ‘80s, early ‘90s, you know, hip hop was just coming in, disco was on its way out, you know, and new jack groove, you know, it had its play. You're getting ready to jump in the ‘90s and, you know, the music– whole music industry changed. You know, same thing with the bands, the same situation: you got people with integrity and want to stick with a band, but, you know, it's– it's a cycle. It's a vicious cycle. It's a vicious cycle. And unless you're grounded, you will get swept up. You know, that's– if there was anything I can tell anybody aspiring to be a musician is stay– stay focused, stay grounded. You know, stay grounded. Don't be too aware of yourself. Don't be too aware of yourself. You know, keep– stay focused on the prize. I also sub with a couple other bands, The Show Band with my good friend Roger Tamez, he leads that band, him and Wednesday Ball. I play with them when they need a sub bass. I also play out at a place called the Rockbox [Theater] in Fredericksburg [Texas]. I had a three year contract there in 2012. It was a great, great gig. You’d do shows for tribute artists, you know, one show on Friday, two shows on Saturday, you go home, you know. I'm home– I was home by eleven o'clock every night. You know, we're there five nights– I mean, five nights on the river, and a lot of people are coming from out of town, you know, coming to Fiesta. And if you can touch those people, you know, [imitating an audience member] “Hey, man, you got a card man? Your grand’s bate– your band's great, do you think you could come to this city?” You know, we love that because it lets you know that you touch that person musically, and you have a product that they like and they're interested in. You know, and the whole thing is, when you get in front of people, just be at your best, professionally. You know, understand who you are, represent yourself, represent your band–and if you're out of the city–represent your city, you know, because you are an ambassador. If you go out of the– the city, if you go out of the state, you're an ambassador of where you– what you represent and where you’re from. You know, so just keep– conduct yourself accordingly.
